Compassionate Column

The 2025 February "Compassionate Column" article was written by Janet Lee, PT, who participated palliative care nurses "Train the Trainers" class held in Beijing and Wu Han of China from 9/19/2024 to 9/30/2024. In this article, Janet shared her experience and what she learned from the class.

We started the "Monthly Reading" column on the CACCC website in 2019 (renamed to "Compassionate Column" in 2025). In the past years, we shared many touching stories from our volunteers and our members about facing end-of-life with theirs loved ones or patients. If you have a story you would like to share, please send a short article (English or Chinese) together with a recent picture to info@caccc-usa.org.

“Heart to Heart Cards: A Novel, Culturally Tailored, Community-Based Advance Care Planning Tool for Chinese Americans”

Results:
The 54 HTH Cards were organized into 4 suits (spiritual, physical, financial/legal, and social). Each card displayed a culturally-tailored EOL issue in English and Chinese. Play styles included one-on-one and group formats (ie. HTH Café). CACCC volunteers conducted 316 HTH Cafés for 2,267 Chinese American adults. The top priority was “If I’m going to die anyway, I don’t want to be kept alive by machines.” Participants thought the session was pleasant and expressed intent to complete advance directives (86.5%).

Conclusion:
HTH Cards represents the first, theory-driven, culturally-tailored ACP tool for Chinese Americans. More research is needed to establish its impact on ACP conversations and outcomes.
