How to Start the Conversation

For Chinese families, the topic of life and death is a taboo. Filial piety, although a traditional virtue, becomes a barrier when communicating with the patient. Family members do not want the patient to know about their illness, and the patient endures the pain and treatment in order to comply with the family’s decision, creating a barrier as well as pain that accumulates over time. In order to help families open up conversations about life and death, the CACCC has created Heart-to-Heart Cards, which allows families to play cards and talk about life and death together, increasing the relationship between family members.

In the video, the Chinese American Coalition for Compassionate Care invited Kaiwen Zhang, CACCC Volunteer in Northern California; Judith Redwing Keyssar, RN, director of the patient and caregiver education at UCSF, Esther Luo, MD, palliative care physician at Kaiser Medical Center in Santa Clara; and Dr. Alex Tsao, Co-Chair (2021), CACCC Board of Directors, and Grace Song, Spiritual Support Counselor, By The Bay Health. They will tell you about the challenges you may face when discussing life and death issues with your family, and how you can use the Heart-to-Heart Cards to help you navigate life and death issues.
