80% of all hospitals in the United States have a palliative care department. The goal is to care for the whole person – body, mind and spirit. The focus is on relieving pain and improving quality of life. Palliative care may be proposed when there is no relief of pain or symptoms, worsening of a chronic or serious condition, and repeated hospital admissions without improvement.
